Following the recent completion of New College House, the University of Pennsylvania’s first new construction of a college house in more than 40 years, pre-construction planning is currently underway for New College House West. NCHW will be located at the northwestern quadrant of Penn’s “superblock” which encompasses the area between 38th and 40th Streets, and Walnut and Spruce Streets. The project site will be bounded by Walnut Street to the north, 40th Street to the west, and Locust Walk to the south. At almost 250,000 SF, the building will house student rooms in suite arrangements, as well as supporting college house functions such as a coffee bar, seminar and study rooms, a living room, and a fitness room. The building will accommodate approximately 450 student beds, as well as several faculty apartments.
The configuration of the building is designed to fit into the scale of the surrounding context. As a U-shaped complex, the building will have a 13-story tower along Walnut Street, with two low-rise 5-story wings projecting to the south. The main entrance will be through a campus green and terrace adjacent to pedestrian thoroughfare Locust Walk, with an additional entrance along 40th Street. A landscaped courtyard will be located inside the secure college house perimeter.
