THE DISCOVERY CENTER

Size10,000 SF
LocationPhiladelphia, PA
OwnerEast Park Leadership and Conservation Center
Completion DateJune 2018

In the almost 70 years since Fairmount Park’s East Park Reservoir was shut down, the basin and its shores were slowly reclaimed by nature. Migrating birds called the reservoir home each year as they traveled south down the eastern seaboard. Fast forward to 2017, and the Discovery Center will be next to call the reservoir home. The Discovery Center project was kicked off with a much-anticipated recent groundbreaking ceremony. The crowd was addressed by Mayor Kenney, PA State Representative Donna Bullock, City Council members, and the Strawberry Mansion CDC team. The Discovery Center is funded by the non-profit East Park Leadership and Conservation Center, a joint initiative between the Audubon Society and the Philadelphia Outward Bound School. The new building will serve as an education center geared to reengage the community with nature. The wood frame structure will feature exposed wood trusses, a climbing wall, and etched bird glass to remain friendly with reservoir wildlife. Also under construction, a high-ropes zipline Challenge Course will neighbor the center. Completion of the Discovery Center is scheduled for June of 2018.
